Some Improvement Seen in Cognitive Function With Exercise, Ibuprofen in Cancer

For adults with cancer receiving chemotherapy, an exercise intervention and low-dose ibuprofen improved some domains of cognitive function, according to a study published online April 20 in Cancer.

Michelle C. Janelsins, Ph.D., M.P.H., from the University of Rochester in New York, and colleagues randomly assigned 86 adult participants with cancer receiving chemotherapy and reporting cognitive problems to one of four study arms for six weeks: Exercise for Cancer Patients (EXCAP)-ibuprofen, EXCAP-placebo, ibuprofen only, and placebo only. EXCAP is a home-based, low- to moderate-intensity progressive walking and resistance exercise prescription.

The researchers found that compared with the placebo group, participants in the EXCAP-placebo group had significantly better attention performance on the Trail Making Test (–21.57 seconds). Greater improvements were seen for the ibuprofen-only group versus the placebo group (difference of –11.27 seconds). Improvements on the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cognitive Function (FACT-Cog) "comments from others" subscale were exhibited by participants in both the EXCAP-ibuprofen and EXCAP-placebo groups compared with the placebo group. Participants in the EXCAP-placebo group had a significant improvement on Rapid Visual Processing mean latency compared with the placebo group; those receiving ibuprofen had an improvement compared with those receiving placebo, which was attributed to a trend after adjustment for reading score. Compared with those not receiving ibuprofen, the ibuprofen group performed less well on the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test‐Revised delayed.

"We are encouraged by the findings of this trial that suggest possible benefits of both interventions for some cognitive domains. Clearly, we saw a more pronounced effect with exercise, which is notable considering the multiple health benefits of exercise for cancer survivors," Janelsins said in a statement.

Final Phase 1 data of zoptarelin doxorubicin Phase 1/2 trial published in Clinical Cancer Research

Aeterna Zentaris Inc. (NASDAQ: AEZS, TSX: AEZ) (the "Company")  announced that an article on final data for the Phase 1 portion of the ongoing Phase 1/2 trial in prostate cancer with zoptarelin doxorubicin (formerly AEZS-108), a hybrid molecule composed of a synthetic peptide carrier and a well-known chemotherapy agent, doxorubicin, has been published in the December issue of Clinical Cancer Research. The article outlines data previously disclosed in June 2013 at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's ("ASCO") Annual Meeting, which demonstrated the compound's safety profile and promising anti-tumor activity in heavily pre‑treated men with castration- and taxane-resistant prostate cancer. These results led to the current investigator-driven Phase 2 portion in this same indication under the supervision of lead investigator, Jacek Pinski, MD, PhD, of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. Cimetidine drug could be one of many common over-the-counter medicines to treat cancer...

We know that, Cimetidine is a histamine H2-receptor antagonist that inhibits stomach acid production. It is largely used in the treatment of heartburn and peptic ulcers. It has been marketed by GlaxoSmithKline (which is selling the brand to Prestige Brands) under the trade name Tagamet (sometimes Tagamet HB or Tagamet HB200). Cimetidine was approved in the UK in 1976 and was approved in the US by the Food and Drug Administration for prescriptions starting January 1, 1979.
Now, it has been concluded that, a popular indigestion medication can increase survival in colorectal cancer, according to research published in ecancermedicalscience. But in fact, scientists have studied this for years - and a group of cancer advocates want to know why this research isn't more widely used.

Blueberry powder may control triple negative breast cancer: In several studies recently conducted at the Beckman Research Institute at the City of Hope, Duarte, CA researchers found that feeding blueberry powder to mice significantly reduced the growth and spread of triple negative breast cancer cells, a very aggressive form of cancer.

In my earlier blog, I did mention about how naked mole rats may help cure cancer. The same researchers have achieved something interesting i.e., they have discovered have discovered the gene that "cancer-proofs the naked mole". For details...
